Chelsea Targeting Marc Guehi Transfer in January?

Chelsea FC

Chelsea is said to have been eyeing a transfer to bolster their defence through the addition of Marc Guehi in the January transfer window. Marc Guehi, now captain at Crystal Palace, and originally a Chelsea academy graduate. But just how likely is such a move today?

Why Marc Guehi Makes Sense: Chelsea Interest

Chelsea‘s defense has been through immense injury this season. Wesley Fofana is long-term injured, and Benoit Badiashile is only just back from injury. With their resources low, a top-class centre back is an obvious addition. Guehi is the man: he’s established in the Premier League, has experience leading his team, and emerged through Chelsea’s academy.

In addition, Guehi is one year shy of Palace’s contract, making a January bargain move more likely — or at least forcing Palace to sell him rather than lose him for free next summer.

What the Reports Say — And Don’t

Some sources assert Chelsea are already in the process of signing a centre back like Guehi in January.

Others warn that Guehi will not be a priority target, citing his valuation and Chelsea’s recent signings.

As of early September 2025, various reports indicated Chelsea have opted against prioritizing Guehi in January.

That is consistent with assertions that internal resources or loanees may be given preference instead.

Most conclusively: in September 2025, Liverpool confirmed a deal to sign Guehi from Crystal Palace for approximately £35 million.  If that comes to fruition, Guehi would no longer be on the table for Chelsea’s January plot.

Conclusion: Ambitious but Unlikely

On paper, there is sense in a January Chelsea move for Marc Guehi. The injury crisis, his contract status, and his background all argue for him. But in reality, recent events make that less likely: Chelsea seemingly downgraded interest, and Liverpool have an almost done deal to purchase him.
