Nowadays, multiple forms of depression can afflict a person during any period of their lives. One such depression is known as Dysthymia or Persistent Depressive Disorder.

This form of depression is often long-lasting wherein an individual may have bouts of depression and mood shifts.

Says therapist Maythal Eshaghian on Dysthymia,

Individuals with PDD often experience feelings of hopelessness, low self-esteem, and a lack of interest or pleasure in most activities. Unlike major depressive disorder, the symptoms of PDD may be less severe but tend to be more enduring. This condition can significantly impair daily functioning and quality of life, affecting various aspects such as work, relationships, and overall well-being.

Signs of dysthymia that we should be aware of at all times

Here’s a list of signs related to Persistent Depressive Disorder or Dysthymia that we should keep in mind.

Low Self-Esteem and Low Self-Confidence

People suffering from dysthymia often have low levels of self-esteem and self-confidence. Also, they aren’t aware of the great abilities that they possess.

Fatigue and Absence of Energy

Moreover, they also feel fatigued and don’t have the energy to pursue any activity. Because of the overburden of overthinking and negative thoughts, they aren’t able to complete their daily tasks.

Feeling Helpless and Hopeless

Furthermore, they also feel that they are helpless and hopeless in this world and keep away from social surroundings and situations.

Poor appetite or Overeating

People with PDD also have eating problems. They may either eat little to no food or tend to overeat a lot. Additionally, they also suffer from sleep problems.

Problem making decisions

Finally, dysthymic people always second-guess their choices and decisions and have a hard time making any new life decisions. Also, they have distress throughout the day.
