How to combat heartburn and what are its symptoms?

Heartburn, also known as acid reflux, is a condition in which the acid from the stomach travels back up the esophagus and causes discomfort just behind the breastbone.

Additionally, this condition can be very painful for the sufferer and they may feel that they are encountering a heart attack.

Moreover, heartburn can be caused by acid reflux, alcohol consumption, spicy food, and overeating. However, it is usually not serious and goes away after a short duration.

Says nutritionist Anjali Mukherjee on heartburn,

Heartburn occurs when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach.

Tips on how to combat heartburn and be careful in the future

Here’s a list that describes what exactly causes heartburn and what are the effective methods to combat this feeling.

Chew your food properly

Firstly, pay attention to your food and make sure that you are chewing it fully before gulping it down. Half-chewed food can remain undigested in the stomach and can cause heartburn.

Don’t eat anything three hours before bed

Furthermore, ensure that the last meal you have before bed is exactly three hours before it. Don’t snack before going to bed as it can lead to this uncomfortable feeling.

Certain foods trigger heartburn

Consuming foods such as citrus fruits, chocolates, and tomatoes is a sure-shot way to invite heartburn. Therefore, consume a balanced diet and keep your body in an alkaline state.

Avoid bad things

These bad things include maida-based foods, alcohol, and smoking which are once again the sources of this feeling. Thus, these have to be avoided at all costs.

A useful remedy to prevent heartburn

Finally, there is a way to prevent future heartburns from happening. Mix half a tablespoon of baking soda in water and consume it. This ensures that you are relieved from this condition.

Thus, these are some of the causes and remedies to battle against this uncomfortable feeling. It is important that we steer clear of this feeling and don’t allow it to happen in our lives.
